GCU Tough Stretch Continues With Matches Against No. 13 Hawai'i

Off to the best start in the program’s history, Grand Canyon University’s men’s volleyball team is off to Hawai’i.
It’s not a trip to celebrate the early-season success, but to help prepare the club for the always-tough Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
The 5-3 Antelopes will play 13th-ranked University of Hawai’i Friday and Saturday nights at 10 p.m. Arizona time. They have played seven of the first 10 matches on the road and five (including this weekend’s contests) against teams from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, traditionally the nation’s strongest league. Earlier this month, GCU won its first-ever match against an MPSF team, UC San Diego.
“This is the culmination of a tough stretch where we really wanted to test our team,” said second-year GCU head coach Jeremy Price, who along with playing the five MPSF teams took on defending NAIA champion California Baptist.
Hawai’i comes into tonight’s match 2-5, but four of those losses have come to teams ranked higher than them. It lost to No. 3 UCLA, twice to No. 7 Pepperdine and to No. 9 Lewis.
During this grueling 10-match stretch, GCU has had its best start in the program’s four-year history. Included during the run is a program-best five-match win streak.
“(This stretch) will get us prepared for the MIVA,” added Price. “We’ve won a match every weekend. This weekend will be the toughest one yet to come up with a win. It’s tough to go to the island and get a win.”
Fans can follow tonight and Saturday’s action from Stan Sheriff Center with live stats, video and audio links provided by University of Hawai’i. All links are available on www.GCULopes.com. There is a fee for the video streaming. Live stats and audio are free.
GCU will have a bye weekend when it returns to Phoenix. The next matches are part of a GCU-hosted event that includes King College and Johnson and Wales Feb. 10-11. GCU takes on Kin at 1 p.m. and Johnson and Wales at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10. The Antelopes play Johnson and Wales and 1 p.m. and King at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11. King and Johnson and Wales play at 4 p.m. each day.
