The No. 11 Grand Canyon University women's basketball team is set to square off against Hawai'i Pacific at 4:30 p.m. today at GCU Arena. Following today's game, the 'Lopes will play five straight road games when they travel to Hawai'i for four games beginning with a matchup at BYU-Hawai'i on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. Arizona time. VS. HAWAI’I PACIFIC: GCU owns a 10-2 record against Hawai’i Pacific. The teams last faced off on March 5, 2011 in Honolulu in a 72-65 ‘Lopes victory. The ‘Lopes have won three of their last four meetings with the Sea Warriors. Hawai’i Pacific is 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
TIME TO GET AWAY: The ‘Lopes will face off against Hawai’i Pacific tonight before hitting the road for five straight games from Jan. 28-Feb. 11, four of which will take place in Hawai’i. The ‘Lopes open their Hawaiian road trip at BYU-Hawai’i on Jan. 28 with tipoff slated for 8 p.m. Arizona time. GCU will return home for three straight contests at GCU Arena beginning on Feb. 13.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU won their ninth straight game, 49-40, on Jan. 19 vs. Hawai’i Hilo to improve their home record to 8-1. The two teams battled for most of the first half as the ‘Lopes carried their smallest lead into the half at 22-21. Angelina Dennison’s three-point play with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game proved to be the turning point as the ‘Lopes used a 10-4 run to extend their lead to nine points with about two minutes left. Maylinn Smith led the offensive charge with 14 points. Joslynn Frazier grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 5-0 on the road this season and have won 12 consecutive regular season road games dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.4 points-per-game away from home.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 454-281 in the first half of their 14 regular season games. GCU allowed a season-low 13 first half points in both contests against Dominican and on Jan. 16 at Dixie State. The ‘Lopes have not trailed at the half in any of their games this season and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: they rank first with a 29.8 defensive field goal percentage and in scoring defense with 46.6 points-per-game; fourth with a 12.6 rebounding margin, seventh with a 92.9 won-lost percentage and 10
th with a 16.8 scoring margin. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 93.0 free throw percentage ranks second.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 74.4 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 80.1 percent, while their 40.9 shooting percentage is the third-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s (42.7) and Cal Baptist’s (41.4). GCU leads the conference with a 34.5 success rate from behind the arc and a 12.6 rebounding margin. The ‘Lopes also own the longest active winning streak at nine games. Individually, Jallisa Butler leads the conference with a 60.6 field goal percentage.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 13 games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 15.5 points-per-game average is third in the PacWest.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler ranks second in the PacWest with 10.7 rebounds-per-game. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State. She has been named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for Dec. 5-11 and Jan. 16-22.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently11
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 5-0 during the stretch. The ‘Lopes have 6 road and 6 home games remaining. Dating back to last season, GCU has won 10 consecutive regular season conference road games.
