VS. DOMINICAN: GCU owns a 4-0 record against divisional foe Dominican. The two last met on Feb. 12, 2011 in a 79-59 ‘Lopes victory in Phoenix. The Penguins enter tomorrow’s game with a 1-9 record and are facing their first PacWest opponent of the season.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: GCU will play back-to-back road games for the second time this season when they face off against PacWest foes Dominican on Jan. 3 and Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 5. The ‘Lopes return to Grand Canyon University Arena on Jan. 11 for a matchup against Dominican.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon defeated Simon Fraser, 65-57, on Dec. 19 in their first overtime contest of the season. The ‘Lopes were led by Maylinn Smith’s career-high 22 points and Jallisa Butler’s 13 rebounds. Butler finished with 13 points to record her third double-double this season. Joslynn Frazier also added a season-high 10 points. The ‘Lopes outrebounded their opponent (43-36) for the eighth time this season and are 7-1 in those contests. Butler, Frazier and Smith were each named to the PacWest Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for their efforts.
STAT SPEAK: GCU ranks third in the nation in scoring defense with 49.6 points-per-game. Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 77.8 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 82.2 percent, while their 40.6 shooting percentage from the field is tied with Cal Baptist for the second-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s 42.1 percent. GCU leads the conference with a 36.5 success rate from behind the arc and an 11.7 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks second in the conference with a 61.8 field goal percentage and 9.7 rebounds-per-game. Nationally, Maylinn Smith’s 94.3 free throw percentage ranks tenth.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in each of the team’s nine games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance in GCU’s 65-57 overtime win against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 16.2 points-per-game average is tied for tops in the PacWest. Smith owns a 37.2 shooting percentage, including a 37.5 mark from the three-point line and a 94.3 percentage from the free throw line. Smith has been named to the PacWest Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll twice this season.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 9.7 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State, surpassing her previous high of 17 rebounds set on Feb. 21, 2011 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. Butler was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently ranked 15
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are embarking on 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests, having already played one game against Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 3 in Phoenix, a 63-59 loss. The ‘Lopes also lost their first conference game last season before winning 15 straight PacWest games en route to a Sweet 16 appearance.
