GCU Volleyball Season Opener Tonight At Arena

Grand Canyon heads into the excitement of a home opener with a new building to play in and momentum from its initial 2012 win at UC Santa Cruz on Monday.
The Antelopes (1-2) welcome NJIT (0-0) and UC San Diego (1-2) to Grand Canyon University Arena for matches Friday through Sunday.
GCU will play the majority of its home matches at Antelope Gym, but is excited to get the opportunity to open the home season at the new 5,000-seat arena this weekend.
“Your home opener is always exciting and to be given the opportunity to play it in our new arena makes it even more exciting,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “We’re hoping it will be a big advantage for us tonight and many years to come.”
Grand Canyon takes on NJIT tonight at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. and plays UCSD Sunday at 2 p.m. Also on Saturday, UCSD and NJIT play each other at 3 p.m.
“This is a good opportunity to see three teams from the three major conferences play a round-robin and see where we stand,” added Price.
NJIT is a member of the EIVA (Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association). UCSD is part of the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) and the Antelopes play in the MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association).
After suffering a pair of losses to the University of Pacific, Grand Canyon ended its three-match road trip with a 3-1 win over UC Santa Cruz.
Tonight’s match is the second in the all-time series with the Highlanders. Grand Canyon won at NJIT last season. It lost its only matchup to UC San Diego in 2010.
Price said he is hopeful his team will get an opportunity to play in the arena later in the season.
