Grand Canyon University’s
Inha Kotsur was today named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while
Eetu Karvonen was named the Men’s Swimmer of the week, after their performances against Cal Baptist on Dec. 17 and UC San Diego on Jan. 7.
Kotsur recorded a pair of wins over top-ranked UC-San Diego on Jan. 7. She swam the 500 free in 5:04.15 and the 1000 free in 10:27.97. Kotsur was a two-time All-American last season.
Karvonen produced five individual event winning swims and five B cut times in Grand Canyon’s last two meets against California Baptist and No. 1 UC-San Diego. He defeated the No. 1 ranked swimmer in the country in the 100 breast during the UC-San Diego meet, swimming a B cut time of 55.11, bettering his time of 55.18 against Cal Baptist. He also swam a faster time in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.70) against UCSD, compared to his 2:03.39 mark against CBU. In the 400 individual medley, Karvonen posted a time of 2:03.39.
This is the fifth and sixth weekly RMAC honor of the season for GCU. Mychala Lynch, Samantha Magnani and Catherine Polito have won the award on the women’s side, while Buddy Turner has been a winner on the men’s side.
The men’s and women’s teams will return to competition on Jan. 21, when they travel to La Mirada, Calif. for duals with Biola.
