The Grand Canyon University women's basketball team returns home to Phoenix to face off against Dominican at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow in hopes of extending their win streak to seven straight games and improve their conference record to 3-1. The 'Lopes moved up to 14th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll after going 2-0 last week in Northern California, defeating conference foes Dominican and Notre Dame de Namur.
VS. DOMINICAN: GCU owns a 5-0 record against divisional foe Dominican. The two teams last faced off on Jan.3 in San Rafael, Calif., where the ‘Lopes were victorious, 62-34. Dominican is 1-12 overall and owns a 0-3 mark in the conference.
ONE-STOP SHOP: Following tomorrow’s game against Dominican at Grand Canyon University Arena, the ‘Lopes will travel to St. George, Utah to face Dixie State on Jan. 16 before returning home to play Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 19 and Hawai’i Pacific on Jan. 24.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon won their sixth straight game, 70-46, on Jan. 5 at Notre Dame de Namur to improve their overall record to 10-1 and their conference record to 2-1. Maylinn Smith led the offensive force with 17 points, while Jenna Pearson chipped in with a career-high 15 points. Jallisa Buter grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and added nine points. GCU shot 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the field and went 7-for-14 from behind the arc. The ‘Lopes also shot 91.7 percent from the charity stripe after sinking 11 of their 12 free throws. GCU induced 19 turnovers by the Argos and held NDNU to a 29.8 mark (17-for-57) from the field.
GETTING IT GOING: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 357-234 in the first half of their 11 regular season games. GCU allowed a season-low 13 first half points at Dominican on Jan. 3. The ‘Lopes have not trailed at the half in any of their games this season.
ALL-AROUND EFFORT: The ‘Lopes have six players averaging at least five points as GCU ranks fourth in the PacWest Conference with 63.8 points-per-game.
STAT SPEAK: GCU ranks second in the nation in scoring defense with 48.5 points-per-game. Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 76.6 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 81.7 percent, while their 41.3 shooting percentage from the field is the third-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s 42.6 percent and Cal Baptist’s 41.8 percent. GCU leads the conference with a 36.8 success rate from behind the arc and a 12.5 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks second in the conference with a 59.1 field goal percentage and 10.4 rebounds-per-game. Nationally, Maylinn Smith’s 94.7 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: they rank first with a 30.9 defensive field goal percentage, sixth with a 12.5 rebounding margin and 14
th with a 76.6 free-throw percentage.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 10 games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance in GCU’s 65-57 overtime win against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 15.5 points-per-game average is fourth in the PacWest. Smith has been named to the PacWest Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll three times this season.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 10.4 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State. She was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently 14
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 2-0 following their road victories at Dominican and NDNU last week.
