In convincing fashion, Grand Canyon (1-2) picked up its first win of the 2011 women’s volleyball season.
The Antelopes picked up a 3-0 victory over host Alaska Fairbanks (0-8) in the 2011 Nanook Classic at the Patty Center Saturday. GCU won by set scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-14.
Sophomore
Megan Davis, who had 19 kills earlier in the day in a 3-2 loss to Dallas Baptist, added eight kills and 14 digs and was named to the all-tournament team.
In Saturday’s win, senior middle blocker
Stephanie McBride had 11 kills with no errors and a .550 hitting percentage. In three matches, McBride combined for 28 kills and 11 blocks and had a .349 hitting average.
Janae Giles, the junior transfer from Dowling College, had her best match in her young GCU career. She tied McBride for a match-best 11 kills. She hit .267 and had eight digs. Freshman libero

Jessica Posse had 17 assists each.
For the match, GCU hit .269. It had a .364 average in the opening set and .333 in the third. The defense helped hold Alaska to a -.009 average.
Grand Canyon is off until the 2011 Holiday Inn Grand Canyon University Invitational at Antelope Gymnasium. The ’Lopes open the event with a 6 p.m. contest Thursday against Montana State Billings. Eleven matches will be played Friday and Saturday. Along with GCU and MSUB, Hawai’i Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur, Colorado Christian and Western New Mexico will participate in the event.
