The Grand Canyon University men’s cross country team has been ranked 10th in the west region, their first-ever ranking since head coach Kim Sims took over the program in 2007.
“We’ve reached our first goal,” said Sims. “Our first goal this season was to be ranked in the region and we did it.”
GCU competed at the National Preview meet in Spokane, Wash. on Sept. 24 where they placed 16th of 25 teams. One of those teams was No.9 Seattle Pacific University who placed 17th overall and were knocked out of the top-10 in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association region rankings. Conference rival BYU-Hawai’i was bumped to No.9 and GCU worked their way into 10th.
In addition to a great team success, senior Kipkorir Mutai finished sixth individually at the preview meet that included both Division I and Division II competitors. At the 2010 region meet, Mutai missed qualifying for the national meet by one individual spot.
“Our team has worked hard this season and it’s a step forward for the program.”
