The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the West Region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II poll, played to a 1-1, double-overtime draw with undefeated BYU-Hawai'i today at BYU-Hawai'i Field in Laie, Hawai'i.
The Antelopes now are 4-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Seasiders, who already have surpassed last season's win total, are 5-0-1, 1-0-1.
GCU had a whopping 37-13 advantage in shots in the game, as well as an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
BYU-Hawai'i junior goalkeeper Josiah Holtz recorded 15 saves.
The 'Lopes goal was scored in the 42nd minute by junior forward
Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College). It was his sixth goal of the season, the second-most in the PacWest.
Robinson was not in the starting lineup for the first time this season.
The Seasiders scored in the 50th minute when junior forward Brett Waters assisted on a goal by sophomore forward Bent Jenson, his fourth of the season.
Thirty-two fouls were called in the game, 22 of which were on GCU (including 10 in the second half).
"Obviously we're very disappointed with a tie, but we'll take a tie over a loss any day," GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "We just have to get better at hitting the net more often.
"This season is a long season. We still have a lot of games left. We just have to figure out how to score more goals."
The 'Lopes' next match is on Thursday, when they take on Hawai'i Pacific (7-1-0, 4-0-0), currently ranked No. 5 in the West Region in the NSCAA poll, at Atherton Field in Kaneohe, Hawai'i.
The Sea Warriors are led by All-America senior forward Chance Bukoski, the reigning PacWest Men's Soccer Player of the Week who leads the conference in goals (8), goals per game (1.00), points (18), points per game (2.25), shots (32) and game-winning goals (3); and is tied for second in assists (2).
