Three-time Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year Trent May and the Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team will host three different youth basketball camps next week.
All of the camps will be conducted at the brand new, state-of-the-art Student Recreation Center on the GCU campus.
The first one, the T.O.P. (Total Offensive Player) Camp for girls in grades 6-12, will be held on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. It will concentrate on the refinement of offensive skills. Campers will learn the intricacies of both guard and post play, as well as fundamentals such as screening, cutting, passing, dribbling and shooting. Tuition is $75.
The second one, the Junior ‘Lope Skills Academy for boys and girls in grades 2-5, will be held on Wednesday and is designed to introduce young players to the game of basketball. It will focus on the development of fundamental skills such as shooting, passing and ball handling. In addition, there will be games, relays, contests and lots of other excitement to guarantee a fun time for all. Tuition is $35.
The third one, the ‘Lopes Team Camp for high school girls, will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is for teams that want to work on their team skills in game situations. Each team will be guaranteed six games, and varsity and junior varsity divisions will be available. Tuition is $350 per team.
Campers should bring a sack lunch, water bottle, and athletic clothing and shoes.
The GCU women’s basketball team is coming off the best season in school history. The Antelopes were ranked No. 9 in the final
USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 poll after finishing with a 29-3 overall record and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time. They won the Pacific West Conference championship for the fourth time in the past five years and were led by National Player of the Year Samantha Murphy.
"It is great way to connect with young players and their families, and let them know what we have to offer,” GCU Associate Head Coach Cory Cole said. “We'll also have a lot of fun and get better working on our game. We can't wait to get started."
Camp registration forms are available on the Women’s Basketball page on GCULopes.com. For more information, please contact Coach Cole at
