Seventeen teams participated in the Grand Canyon University women's basketball program's 'Lopes Team Camp for high school girls on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the new Student Recreation Center on the GCU campus.
It was the third of three youth basketball camps conducted last week by Head Coach Trent May, Associate Head Coach Cory Cole and members of the 2010-11 Pacific West Conference champion GCU women's basketball team. The first, the T.O.P. (Total Offensive Player) Camp for high school girls, was held on Monday and Tuesday. The second. the Junior 'Lope Skills Academy for boys and girls in grades 2-5, was held on Wednesday.
The GCU women’s basketball team is coming off the best season in school history. The Antelopes were ranked No. 9 in the final USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 poll after finishing with a 29-3 overall record and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time. They won the PacWest title for the fourth time in the past five years and were led by senior guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep), who was named National Player of the Year, and May, who was selected PacWest Coach of the Year for the third time.
