Even with an unusual Santa Ana wind blowing, making things difficult for most of the competition, the Grand Canyon University women's track & field team garnered four NCAA qualifying marks at the 17th Steve Scott Invitational last Friday and Saturday on the campus of UC Irvine.
On Saturday, freshman
Brianne Kee (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) placed fifth in the log jump with a leap of 5.82 meters (19 feet, 1 1/4 inches), a provisional mark and the 11th best in the nation this year.
On Sunday, redshirt freshman
Shavine Hodges (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Mount Alvernia, Colbourne College) finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.91 seconds, a provisional time and the second fastest by a college student-athlete at the event. She accomplished the feat despite running into a big head wind.
Hodges also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.94 seconds, a provisional time and also the second fastest by a college student-athlete at the event.
Hodges is fifth in the 100 meters and eighth in the 200 meters in the national NCAA Division-II rankings.
Sophomore
Amber Yingling (Peoria, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis, Northern Arizona University) placed 11th in
the triple jump with a leap of 11.92 meters (39 feet, 1 1/4 inches). It was a very difficult competition, with five national-ranked Division I jumpers and two post-collegiate athletes in the field.
The Antelopes will compete in the Lance Chance Qualifier at Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
The 2011 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship will be held May 26-28 at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium on the Cal State University Stanislaus campus in Turlock, Calif.
