In a game of missed scoring opportunities, Cal State East Bay made the most of their chance in the ninth inning to defeat Grand Canyon University, 3-2, today at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 21-25 overall with one game remaining in the 2011 season. Cal State East Bay improves to 17-32.
The Pioneers were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but Nick McManus’ double with a runner on third in the ninth gave them a 3-2 lead.
The Antelopes, who finished the day 1-for-12 with RISP, had runners on first and second in the ninth, but failed to push the tying run across the plate.
Jackie Samora got the rally going with a two-out single to left field.
Joey Bristyan followed with a walk to put the tying run in scoring position. East Bay starter Paul Jinkens was able to get
R.J. Etchebarren to pop out to second to end the game and close out his first win of the season.
After falling behind 1-0 early, GCU was able to score two runs in the fifth on a throwing error by Jinkens and sacrifice fly by Tyler Bair.
Samora led the GCU offense today, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Cody Repenning took the loss for GCU, allowing a run on four hits over 2.2 innings.
Coltin White pitched 4.1 innings in relief of starter
David Wydeven, allowing two runs (zero earned) on six hits. He fanned three while walking one.
Grand Canyon will close out the season when they face the Pioneers tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Brazell Stadium. GCU will honor its seven seniors prior to the game.
