Grand Canyon has added three junior college transfers to its women’s volleyball program.
Setter Taryn Salum, middle blocker Jessica Swift and outside hitter Aliyyah Abdullah have all signed to play for the Antelopes starting with the 2011 season.
"I think all three players bring added maturity with their age and experience," said coach Kris Naber. "All three have played at a high level with their junior college programs."
Salum, a 6-0 setter from Scottsdale Community College and Chandler Hamilton High School, is a two-time first team NJCAA All-American. Four times (over two seasons), she was named her conference’s player of the week and she was twice named first team all-conference and first-team all-region.
As a freshman, she was nominated for the NJCAA Female Athlete of the Year. She averaged 8.44 assists per game and had a .420 hitting percentage.
"She's got size, athleticism and comes from a very good program," said Naber. "She knows how to run an offense."
Abdullah is a 5-9 outside hitter from Pasadena Community College and Balboa High School in San Francisco. She averaged 3.57 kills per set, ranking her 13th in California. She was a first-team all-conference and first team all-state choice.
"She can fly and she can hit with some heat behind it," Naber said. "She can put balls away. I'm very excited to see what impact she has."
Swift is 6-2 and comes from San Joaquin Delta College and Stockton Lincoln High School in California.
She was 19
th in the state in kills at 3.41 per set and averaged just less than one block per game. She was also named first team all-state, first team all-Big 8 Conference and was a conference player of the week selection.
"You look at her stats, she can be a factor on offense, but we're looking for her to be a strong defensive player," added Naber.
The trio joins two freshmen outside hitters, Mackenzie Phelps (Prescott, Ariz.) and Hayleigh Friemoth (Hemet, Calif.) signed earlier in the spring period.
