A week after junior Tyler Sipes (Bloomington, IL/Bloomington, Mesa Community College) won the men's 60-meter hurdles to become Grand Canyon University's first-ever track & field national champion and six Antelopes earned All-America honors at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship, the GCU men's and women's track & field teams began their transition to the outdoor season at Arizona State University's 2011 Baldy Castillo Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe.
Teams that had at least one representative in the meet included GCU, ASU, Dickinson State, Manhattan, Mesa Community College, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada-Las Vegas, North Dakota State, Northern Arizona, Scottsdale Community College, South Dakota and Southern Utah.
Nine of those 13 teams are Division I.
Sipes and two of the 'Lopes' other All-Americans, junior sprinter Mikio Bain (Glendale, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis, Glendale Community College) and freshman sprinter/jumper AAron Hill (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field), as well as junior hurdler Clark Coyle (Mesa, AZ/Mesa, Mesa Community College), are being redshirted in the outdoor season for personal and team-development purposes. That doesn't mean that those individuals can't compete outdoors this spring, however. They can, but they must do so unattached and their results don't count for their teams.
Hill did just that yesterday and won the men's long jump with a leap of 7.61 meters (24 feet, 11.75 inches). Had he been competing for GCU, the mark would automatically qualify him for the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship May 26-28 at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium on the Cal State University Stanislaus campus in Turlock, Calif.
Hill's performance and that of sophomore Amber Yingling (Peoria, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis, Northern Arizona University) in the women's long jump were the highlights for GCU this weekend.
Yingling, who was competing for the 'Lopes, hit the provisional qualifier with a leap of 5.76 meters (18 feet, 10.75 inches).
"It was a pretty good meet to open the outdoor season," Head Coach Tom Flood said. "After a tough week of practice, it was a decent transition to the outdoor season."
Sipes and another All-American, redshirt freshman Shavine Hodges (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Mount Alvernia, Colbourne College), did not run because of soreness from nationals last weekend.
"Better safe than sorry," Flood said.
Nonetheless, given the hard week of training and the inevitable letdown a week after the indoor national championship, the results probably were a little better than anticipated. Bain, who competed unattached, finished second in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.62 seconds and third in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.39 seconds. Coyle, who also was unattached, finished third in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.92 seconds and third in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.32 seconds.
GCU's 4 x 100-meter relay team of sophomore Amber Christenberry (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood, Glendale Community College), freshman Brianne Kee (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain), sophomore Lesilia Foster (Glendale, AZ/Copper Canyon, Glendale Community College) and junior Precious Amukamara (Glendale, AZ/Apollo, Glendale Community College) placed third, behind UNLV and North Dakota State.
"We got the stick around," Flood said. "It wasn't pretty. That's really what these early season meets are all about."
