Redshirt freshman
Shavine Hodges (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Mount Alvernia, Colbourne College) won the women's 60-meter dash in a personal best 7.38 seconds to highlight the performance of Grand Canyon University's first-year women's and men's track & field teams -- ranked No. 14 and 15 in the nation, respectively, in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II indoor rankings -- in the Lumberjack Invitational today at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff
It was the last of three consecutive meets the Antelopes have had on the Northern Arizona University campus and the second-to-last chance they have to add qualifiers for the Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held March 11-12 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
In addition to NAU, competition included Arizona State, Arizona, San Diego State, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Dominguez Hills and San Marcos. As has been the case the past two weeks, the conditions inside the Walkup Skydome weren't great. The facility is undergoing renovations and is considered a construction zone, so no spectators are allowed. It's also very cold, both inside and out.
"We're just thankful to survive the elements," GCU Head Coach Tom Flood said. "We survived the stiff competition and the elements that northern Arizona can throw at you this time of year."
Hodges didn't just survive the competition and the elements; she thrived in them. Her time in the finals of the 60-meter dash is the fastest in the nation this year, which automatically qualifies her for the National Meet.
Prior to today's meet, the 'Lopes had qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship in 10 events -- women's long jump (freshman
Brianne Kee; Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain), men's 200 meters (junior
Mikio Bain; Glendale, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis, Glendale Community College), women's 200 meters (Hodges), women's 60-meter dash (Hodges), men's 60-meter dash (Bain), men's 60-meter hurdles (Sipes), men's long jump (freshman
AAron Hill; Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field); women's 400-meter dash (junior
Precious Amukamara; Glendale, AZ/Apollo, Glendale Community College), women's pole vault women's long jump (junior
Brittany Warren; Laramie, WY/Laramie Senior, Paradise Valley Community College) and women's triple jump (sophomore
Amber Yingling; Peoria, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis, Northern Arizona University).
Flood played it safe with his teams this week, choosing not to run any of the 200-meter dashes or the mile relays because he didn't want any of his student-athletes to pull muscles this late in the indoor season.
In addition to Hodges, the 'Lopes got another outstanding performance from Hill, who won the long jump for the third straight week at NAU. His winning leap today was 7.30 meters (23 feet, 11.50 inches). He previously hit the provisional qualifier with a leap of 7.36 meters (24 feet, 1.75 inches) and ranks No. 3 nationally in the long jump.
Sipes won the 60-meter hurdles today with a time of 7.94 seconds. He already hit the automatic qualifier in that event with the same time, the third fastest in the nation this year.
Warren tied for sixth in the pole vault today with a vault of 3.51 meters (11 feet, 6.25 inches), which is one centimeter higher than her provisionally qualifying vault of 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5.75 inches). It moved her up one spot to No. 17 nationally in the pole vault.
Yingling, who provisionally qualified in the triple jump with a mark of 11.64 meters (38 feet, 2.25 inches) at the NAU Open last week, improved by almost three inches and finished fourth in that event today with a jump of 11.71 meters (38 feet, 5.0 inches).
Bain, who is tied for No. 6 nationally in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.79, which provisionally qualifies him for the National Meet, ran a 6.76 in the finals today.
He also is No. 5 nationally in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.50, also a provisional qualifier. Again, he did not compete in that event today.
On the women's side, Hodges is No. 4 nationally in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.28 seconds, a provisional qualifier. She also was held out of that event today.
Amukamara provisionally qualified in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.06 seconds. Today she finished eighth with a time of 57.31 seconds.
Kee ranks No. 8 nationally in the long jump with a leap of 5.75 meters (18 feet, 10.50 inches), a provisional qualifier. She finished fourth today with a leap of 5.62 meters (18 feet, 5.25 feet).
Next Saturday, GCU will compete in the Run for the Dream Invitational in Fresno, Calif.
"It's really just a chance to stay race-sharp," Flood said.
