The No. 17 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team won, 54-46, against San Francisco State tonight in their final game of the PacWest/CCAA Challenge in San Francisco. The ‘Lopes have now won each of their four games as part of the tournament over the past two seasons.
With the win, GCU improved to 6-1 on the season while San Francisco State fell to 2-7. The win was the Antelopes’ ninth-straight regular season road victory.
"It feels good getting our second road win and finishing the tournament strong," said head coach Trent May. "We had to battle tonight and the win certainly did not come easy. I am proud of their efforts."
GCU once again got off to a quick start, posting a 10-4 run over the first five minutes, seven of which were scored by
Jallisa Butler. The ‘Lopes were once again strong on the boards, grabbing 30 rebounds in the first half and finishing with 52 boards on the night.
Butler led the team with a career-high 19 rebounds, surpassing her previous high of 17 rebounds on Feb. 21, 2011 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. Butler also recorded her second double-double in as many nights after also scoring 11 points en route to being named the tournament MVP.
"I am really proud of Jallisa for being named MVP and getting her second double-double tonight," added May. "Her rebounding and defensive intensity were paramount for us tonight."
Maylinn Smith finished the night with 11 points in her seventh consecutive double-digit scoring effort.
Petrolina Chilaka added seven points. Smith was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with Butler.
The ‘Lopes carried a 25-21 lead into the locker room at the half despite shooting just 28.6 from the field. GCU opened the second half with a 12-0 run to give them their largest lead of the game, 37-21, with just over 15 minutes left. Chilaka had four points during the stretch, while
Jenna Pearson and Smith each added three points and
Stevie Kamphad two points.
"This was a total team effort tonight," May said. "We had to grind this game out. Our defensive pressure was great and the players really cracked down when they needed to."
San Francisco State used a 9-0 run to pull with 52-46 with just over one minute left but were held scoreless for the final minute. Smith made two free throws with ten seconds left to secure the victory.
GCU will next be in action when they host Simon Fraser for two games on Dec. 18 and 19 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Game times are 2 p.m. on Dec. 18 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 19.
