Grand Canyon University’s volleyball team looks to set a new school record and keep its postseason hopes alive at Dixie State Saturday.
GCU (20-6, 10-4) is ranked No. 10 in the latest
NCAA Division II West Region poll. The top eight advance to the region tournament. The ‘Lopes are looking to earn their first NCAA regional bid since 1995, when they finished 21-10 under current head coach Kris Naber and moved on to the Southwest Regional.
The ’Lopes defeated Arizona Christian 3-0 Tuesday to tie a school record with their 12th consecutive win. GCU also won 12 straight in 1993.
To extend hopes and streaks - including a 10-0 record in away matches - GCU will need to snap a five-game skid against Dixie State (13-9, 8-6). It has a three-game losing streak in St. George, Utah.
After predicted to finish sixth in the preseason poll, GCU is in second place in the Pacific West Conference with only two matches remaining. It will play Dixie State in Phoenix Nov. 12 on Senior Night to wrap up the regular season. The ‘’Lopes will honor seniors
Brooke Blomenkamp and
Stephanie McBride.
Blomenkamp, a right side hitter, is the team leader in kills (213) and kills per set (2.57). McBride, a middle hitter, leads all hitters in attack percentage (.292) and tops the club in blocks (104). Her 1.25 blocks per set average ranks No. 12 in the nation.
As a team, GCU is ranked No. 15 in the country in digs per set (18.2). Freshman libero
Mackenzie Phelps is No. 22 (5.35).
