Grand Canyon won its 12th straight match, tying a school record, with a 3-0 victory against Arizona Christian in the inaugural regular season sporting event at Grand Canyon University Arena Tuesday.
GCU (20-6) won by set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-7.
The program last won 12 in a row in 1993.
“We felt very honored to play in the arena,” said GCU coach Kris Naber. “It’s a privilege to be a part of the first regular season game. It’s something they can take away from their Grand Canyon experience.”
After a few early game jitters, the ’Lopes got on track. GCU trailed 4-0 before taking control of the first set. Its first lead came on a service ace from sophomore outside hitter
Caelen Hiller to make it 7-6. Senior middle hitter
Stephanie McBride dominated the opening game with seven kills without an error on eight attempts (.875).
“I think we had a little bit of nerves but got back on track,” said Naber. “They did a phenomenal job of creating the mentality of expecting to win. No matter who we have on the court, they’ve developed the right mentality and expectations.”

Kristen Preach had 12 first-set assists.
