Sophomore midfielder
Cierra Valdez (Phoenix, AZ , Westview) scored the game-winner at 59:02 to lead the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Academy of Art University in a crucial Pacific West Conference clash tonight at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
The Antelopes, who have lost only once in their past 10 games, improved to 7-4-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the PacWest. They are the only NCAA women's soccer program in Arizona with a winning record. The Urban Knights, who are one win away from setting their single-season record for wins, fell to 3-7-2, 1-5-2.
GCU played without its star player, junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun), who is in Serbia, where she will play for the "A" national team in its qualifier for the 2013 UEFA Women's European Championship against Slovenia on Saturday.
Nesic, who was named PacWest Player of the Year, First-Team All-PacWest, First-Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Performance Subaru NCAA Division II All-West Region and Second-Team Daktronics All-West Region last season, is No. 18 nationally in points per game (2.0) and No. 21 in goals per game (0.818) this year.
She was selected PacWest Player of the Week after scoring two goals and having two assists in games played Oct. 1-16. She is first in the PacWest in shots (73) and shots per game (6.64), tied for first in points (22) and points per game, tied for second in goals (9) and goals per game, tied for sixth in assists (4), and seventh in assists per game (0.36).
Valdez scored on a cross from the right side from sophomore defender

Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol, Washington State University) (3-3-2) recorded her third shutout of the season and the fifth for GCU.
