The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team, which has lost only once in its past nine games, will face Academy of Art University at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday and noon on Saturday in crucial Pacific West Conference matches.
The Antelopes (6-4-2 overall, 5-1-1 in the PacWest) are in fourth place in the PacWest behind California Baptist (10-1-1, 6-0-1), Hawai'i Pacific (8-3-2, 5-2-2) and defending champion BYU-Hawai'i (9-0-1, 5-0-1).
The Urban Knights (3-6-2, 1-4-2) are in seventh place but are very competitive, as evidenced by their heartbreaking 3-2 loss to HPU on Sept. 20 The game-winner was scored in the 84th minute.
GCU is very much alive in the conference-title race. Cal Baptist plays at BYU-Hawai'i today, hosts the 'Lopes on Oct. 26 and plays in Phoenix on Oct. 29. HPU has two games left with BYU-Hawai'i, on Oct. 21 in Laie and Nov. 2 in Kaneohe. And, in addition to the two matches against HPU, BYU-Hawai'i has three games in five days on a trip to the Bay Area Oct. 24-28.
The 'Lopes are led by junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun), who was named PacWest Player of the Year, First-Team All-PacWest, First-Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Performance Subaru Women's NCAA Division II All-West Region and Second-Team Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s West Region last season.
She is the current PacWest Player of the Week after scoring two goals and having two assists in games played Oct. 1-16.
Nesic is No. 18 out of 150 ranked players nationally in points per game (2.0; Elin Nyman of Post leads with 3.11) and No. 21 in goals per game (Nyman averages 1.444).
She ranks first in the PacWest in shots (73) and shots per game (6.64) and is tied for first in points (22) and points per game; tied for second in goals (9) and goals per game; tied for sixth in assists (4); and seventh in assists per game (0.36).
As a team, GCU is No. 36 out of 330 ranked teams nationally in scoring offense with 2.33 goals per game, No. 81 in won-lost-tied percentage (.583) and No. 90 in shutout percentage (0.333).
