For the fourth time in 11 weeks, Grand Canyon University senior
Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) was named the Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The award was announced by the league office Monday night for games played Jan. 24-30.
In two GCU victories, Murphy averaged 32.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals. She shot 56.4 percent (22-for-39) from the floor and 84.2 percent (16-for-19) from the line.
Murphy leads the nation in scoring with a 25.2 average. She was also named Player of the Week Nov. 15, Nov. 29 and Jan. 3.
Senior guard
Rosalyn Nelson (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley) was named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll. Nelson was tied for second in the league in scoring for the week (18.0) and led the league in steals (6.0) and tied for the league lead in assists (6.0). She also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game. She shot 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the field and 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the line. Nelson added an amazing assist-turnover ratio of 12.0.
In last week's wins, GCU set a new record for scoring margin (69) in a 105-36 victory over Chaminade. The win also set a season-mark for 100-plus scoring games in a season at three. GCU had two 100-plus scoring games in the 1992-93 season.
On Saturday, in a 94-43 win over BYU-Hawai'i, GCU tied a mark for consecutive home wins at nine.
Ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, GCU is ranked in the nation's Top 25 in 13 statistical categories.
Along with Murphy leading the country in scoring, she is fifth in free-throw percentage (90.1), 11th in 3-pointers per game (3.1) and 15th in 3-point field goal percentage (45.0). Nelson is 10th in steals (3.3).
As a team, GCU ranks in eight categories. The 'Lopes are third in scoring margin (21.5), sixth in rebound margin (9.3), seventh in offense (81.1), 11th in win-loss percentage (17-2, 89.5), 17th in turnover margin (5.79), 19th in assist-turnover ratio (1.03), 23rd in field goal percentage defense (35.2) and 25th in assists per game (16.6).
GCU (17-2, 5-1), ranked No. 6 in the West Region, is one game out of first place in the PacWest, trailing No. 11 Dixie State (16-1, 6-0) and Hawai'i Pacific (13-4, 7-1).
The Antelopes play host to Dixie State, which gave them their lone loss, Saturday at 3 p.m.
