Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol, Washington State University) played the game of her life, making five unbelievable saves, but it wasn't enough as the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw with BYU-Hawaii tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
As expected, it was a tough, even match between the top two teams in the Pacific West Conference. Eighteen fouls were called, 10 of them on the Antelopes, and each team recorded seven shots on goal.
GCU got on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute when freshman forward Veronica Nikas (Scottsdale, AZ/Veritas Prep) headed in a perfectly-placed free kick from sophomore midfielder Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun).
The score remained 1-0 until the 69th minute, when the Seasiders' Natasha Aiono drilled a free kick into the upper 90. Just three minutes later, BYU-Hawaii struck again when Abbie Lever took an excellent cross from Britt Edman and found the back of the net.
GCU tied it in the 77th minute when senior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson/Chandler-Gilbert CC) took a corner kick that BYU-Hawaii's keeper punched in.
The Seasiders had a 21-11 edge in shots in the game, as well as a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
GCU's season record now is 6-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the Pacific West Conference, while BYU-Hawaii is 4-0-2, 3-0-1.
The two teams meet again at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field.
