Two-time junior college All-American and national champion Kipkorir Mutai has signed a national letter-of-intent to run cross country at Grand Canyon University.
Mutai, from Bomet, Kenya, ran for Gillette (Wyo.) Community College. He finished sixth in the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association Championships with an 8K time of 25:01.
He won a national championship, the first for Gillette, in the NJCAA half-marathon with a record time of 1:07:49.8. In the 2010 NJCAA Track and Field Championships, he finished third in the 10,000 Meter Run with a time of 31:11.07.
"I chose GCU because it has an excellent Nursing program where I can get the best education," said Mutai. "I also chose it because of the good cross country/track and field program.
"I am very excited to come and be part of the cross country/track program. I am hoping to come and run fast with the team and do well in the competitions and make it to nationals."
Mutai chose GCU over Division I programs McNeese State and Texas-Pan American and Division II Nova Southeastern.
"He's definitely going to make an immediate impact," said GCU cross country coach Kim Sims. "WIth his experience and success, it will only help make the rest of the team stronger."
