Grand Canyon University junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and senior pitcher Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) were named the Pacific West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their performances over the weekend in a four-game series sweep of Academy of Art.
Bair hit .563 (9-of-16) with four doubles, four stolen bases, 11 RBI and nine runs scored. He had an .813 slugging average and .526 on-base percentage.
Urlaub threw his third shutout and fourth complete game of the season in a 7-0 win Friday. He fanned five and gave up four hits, all singles. The Urban Knights' lineup hit just .182 against the left-hander.
Freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon), sophomore shortstop P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird), senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and junior pitcher Justin McKee (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) were named to the league's Top 10 Honor Roll.
It is the third time this season GCU has had a player of the week and second time it has had a pitcher of the week. Garcia was selected Feb. 8 and freshman outfielder Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) was chose Mar. 15. Senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) was the league's top hurler on Mar. 1.
GCU, currently in second place in the PacWest, plays host to first-place Hawai'i Pacific for doubleheaders Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) at Brazell Stadium.
