Bair extends hitting streak to 11 games
Grand Canyon dropped a pair of Pacific West Conference games to Hawai'i Pacific at Brazell Stadium Friday.
GCU (25-19, 15-11) lost by scores of 8-6 and 9-4 to the league-leading Sea Warriors (27-9, 19-3).
GCU junior Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) extended his team-best hitting streak to 11 games. He also hit his 18th double of the season. It is the most in a season since current coach Dan Colella hit 20 in 2007.
Trailing 7-1, GCU made the first game interesting. With his hitting streak on the line, Bair hit a two-run homer to cut the gap to two runs. Senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) had two hits and two runs scored.
In the second game, HPU broke 4-4 tie with a five-run sixth inning.
Junior first baseman Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) gave GCU a 2-0 lead with a two-run first inning single. In the fifth, Bair tied it with a two-run double.
It has been a tough few days for the Antelopes. Earlier sophomore center fielder and leadoff hitter Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) was lost, possibly for the rest of the season, when he was hit in the face by a pitched ball in practice. His replacement, R.J. Etchebarren (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley) pulled up with a leg injury running out a ground ball Friday and had to leave the game. Weekend starter Danny Skelly (Elmwood Park, Ill./St. Joseph’s) suffered a mid-week injury that will keep him off the mound Saturday, while Friday starter Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had to leave Friday’s start early after a possible mild concussion. Also Friday, senior relief pitcher Chris Shelley (Phoenix, Ariz./St. Mary’s) left after facing just two batters with an arm injury.
“You can look at all the bad stuff that happened to us, but you have to learn how to adjust,” said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton. “Those kinds of things happen and you have to overcome it.”
The four-game series wraps up Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. It will be GCU Senior Day and the 'Lopes will honor 10 players participating in the final games at Brazell Stadium.
GCU will also introduce the seniors from HPU. Pre-game ceremonies are expected to start at 12:45 p.m.
Antelopes to be honored include, along with Courtland, Skelly, Urlaub and Shelley are third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon), infielder Bryce Lefebvre (Scottsdale, Ariz./Paradise Valley), outfielder Billy Schroeder (Muskego, Wisc./Muskego), first baseman John Stanko (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge), pitcher Jon Weaver (Castle Rock, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and pitcher Mark Hardy (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork).
