Skelly, Hardy combine on 2-hitter

POMONA, Calif. -- Grand Canyon (17-14) split the first of two doubleheaders with Cal Poly Pomona Saturday.
The teams meet again Sunday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
The 'Lopes lost the opener 7-3, then got a combined two-hitter from Danny Skelly (Elmwood Park, Ill./St. Joseph's/Chandler-Gilbert) and Mark Hardy (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork/Salt Lake CC) for a 4-2 victory.
Hardy picked up the win in relief, giving up one hit and striking out one in two innings. Skelly fanned five, walked five and gave up one hit and two earned runs in five innings.
In game two, three seventh inning runs were the difference. GCU senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico) hit a sacrifice fly to put the 'Lopes ahead 3-2. An RBI-double from junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) made it 4-2. The rally started with a one-out single from freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon). Sophomore Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) also had a single in the inning.
In the opener, Grand Canyon trailed 3-1 in the sixth when Bair, senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) and sophomore P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) had consecutive singles to cut it to 3-2. In the seventh, Green scored on a wild pitch.
Cal Poly regained the lead with three in the seventh.
