Earn split Saturday with marathon win over LMC
BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Grand Canyon (14-19) bounced back from a tough loss in the morning to earn an impressive five-set win in the afternoon at Lees-McRae College Williams Gymnasium Saturday.
Dropping a 3-1 decision to King College, GCU answered with a 3-2 win over Lees-McRae.
Against Lees-McRae, the Antelopes won 30-32, 31-29, 23-30, 33-31, 15-13.
Freshman libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) shattered his own record for digs in a match with 28. Bruns had set the mark with 23 digs against Limestone in January.
Frosh setter Brad Moore (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) also broke the mark for assists in a match with 67. He had 65 earlier in the season against Cal Baptist.
Down 29-28 in the second set and on the verge of going down 2-0, sophomore Taylor Griffin (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) had a kill to tie it and GCU took advantage of two Lees-McRae attack errors to even the sets 1-1.
To win the fourth set and take a 2-1 lead, GCU got a pair of kills from sophomore Brock Hutchins (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland/Hawai'i) to wrap up the match. Hutchins also had the decider to end the match. He finished with a team-high 22 kills (.333) and had 13 digs.
GCU set a new team mark for digs in a match with 75.
Freshman Tyler Capko (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) had 18 kills. Sophomore Nick Jensen (Herning, Denmark/Ikast Gymnasium/NJIT) had 10 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists. Griffin finished with 10 kills and Moore added 10 digs.
Grand Canyon lost to King College in the morning 32-30, 25-30, 30-18, 30-22. Hutchins had 13 kills. Freshman Robbie Brannick (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) had 35 assists. Bruns had 11 digs.
The win over LMC was Grand Canyon's second in as many days.
GCU travels to UCLA Wednesday and USC Thursday for its next matches.
