GCU senior
Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) wasn't perfect, but he was close.
Urlaub threw a one-hitter, but faced the minimum for a seven-inning ballgame in the Antelopes 8-0 win over Academy of Art in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Brazell Stadium Saturday.
Grand Canyon (16-13, 9-7) lost the second game 8-6.
Urlaub retired the first 11 batters before Darnell Quinney's single to left field. Urlaub followed by picking Quinney off first base.
In the seventh, Urlaub hit AAU's Jonathan Robbins with a pitch, but picked him off, too.
The lefty fanned six, one short of his season high. His record improved to 2-1 and his ERA dropped to a team-best 2.35. In 38 and one-third innings, he has only walked four.
He had plenty of support, too.
In the first inning, senior third baseman
Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on a double by designated hitter
Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium).
Singles by Green, junior right fielder
Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and frosh
Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) led to two more runs in the third. Courtland added an RBI with a ground out.
Canyon scored five in the fifth with the help of two Urban Knights' errors. The inning's big hit was a two-run double by junior first baseman
Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado).
In game two, GCU trailed 8-1 before scoring five in the fifth. Courtland had a two-run homer, his fifth of the season and second in as many nights.
Santor went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader and raised his average to .408.
GCU is off until doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.
