Grand Canyon University junior center Kia Gibson (Nine Mile Falls, Wash./Lakeside/N. Idaho) has been named the Pacific West Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 4-10.
It is the first time Gibson has won the award. She is the third Antelope player to earn the honor this season. Junior guard Samantha Murphy (pictured, Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) was the Nov. 23 and Nov. 30 winner.
Gibson helped lead GCU to a 2-0 week by averaging 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. She led the league in scoring and tied for 10th in rebounding. She shot 65 percent from the field, second in the conference, and had 11-of-13 free throws (84.6 percent).
Murphy was selected to the weekly Top 10 Honor Roll.
Murphy averaged 17 points and five rebounds in victories over Chaminade and BYU-Hawai'i. She tied for fifth in the league with 4.5 assists per game and sixth with three steals. She also hit 10-of-11 free throws (90.9 percent) and ranked seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.8).
GCU, the three-time defending Pacific West Conference champions, are 2-0 in league play. The 'Lopes play at Dominican Thursday, at Notre Dame de Namur Saturday and Academy of Art Monday before returning home for a 5 p.m. Jan. 23 contest against Notre Dame de Namur.
