Grand Canyon University women's basketball standout Samantha Murphy was named the Pacific West Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of The Year for the 2008-09 season.
The award was announced at Thursday's PacWest Media Day in San Francisco.
Three GCU scholar-athletes received PacWest awards for their respective sports. Along with Murphy, baseball player Austin Stockfisch and soccer player Jordan Demos were selected. GCU tied BYU-Hawaii for most selections with three.
"Every award (Murphy) gets, she is so deserving," said GCU women's basketball coach Trent May. "I know there are many more to come. It's a privilege to have her at Grand Canyon and it's great to have her for two more years."
Along with being selected to the conference all-academic team, Murphy, a sophomore guard from Phoenix Xavier College Prep, was a first-team All-PacWest choice, averaging 19.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. She was a second team choice Daktronics All-West Region and CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District VIII first-team all-academic.
"I'm really honored to be named out of all the outstanding female athletes in the PacWest," Murphy said. "School has always been No. 1 to me and I've always tried to organize my time the best I can."
BYU-Hawaii basketball standout Lucas Alves was the PacWest Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
