Granted, it's early in the Pacific West Conference portion of the schedule, but the wins that you are able to get early count just as much as the ones you get late.
Thursday at Antelope Gymnasium, two of the women's basketball program's vying to stay at the top meet when Grand Canyon (9-6, 3-0) plays host to Dixie State (8-5, 2-0).
"It's still early, but it's big," said GCU coach Trent May.
As their conference records indicate, both teams are hot. Grand Canyon is currently on a five-game winning streak, which started with a victory over then-No. 23 Franklin Pierce. Dixie State has won four straight including a win over a 9-5 Western Washington team away from home.
"It's huge," said GCU junior guard Rosalyn Nelson of Thursday's contest. "It's going to be a good matchup. They have as good talent as us."
The teams will play Friday, too, but it will count only as a region game and not toward the PacWest standings. Thursday's winner will keep pace with Hawai'i Pacific, also unbeaten in league play. The Sea Warriors play winless Chaminade Thursday.
"It's going to be a good game," said GCU sophomore guard Samantha Murphy (pictured).
For conference games, Murphy leads the Lopes with a 17.3 scoring average and is shooting .645 from the field.
Along with Friday's non-conference game, the teams will meet two more times. To close the regular season, GCU visits St. George, Utah on March 6-7 with the first game counting in the conference standings.
Chances are that will be a big game, too.
