Grand Canyon stole one from Hawai'i Hilo Tuesday -- literally.
Behind 21 steals, the most since it had 21 in a 87-36 win over Chaminade at Antelope Gym Jan. 26, 2008, Grand Canyon (9-6, 3-0) defeated Hilo (7-5, 2-3) 82-64 at Antelope Gym.
Junior guard Rosalyn Nelson was one shy of her own school record with eight steals. She added a team-high 23 points to go with six rebounds and six assists. She also went over the 1,100-point mark (1,104) for her career.
"We just came out and played 40 minutes straight," said Nelson. "Usually we're a second-half team, but we came out with a lot of energy tonight."
Sophomore guard Samantha Murphy (pictured) had 21 points and four steals. Junior forward Dana Iverson had 10 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior forward Jacque Stevens came off the bench to score eight points.
"I think we played our game," said Murphy. "We like to run and get steals and get in transition and we worked well together as a team."
GCU broke a 2-2 tie with a 14-2 run, Murphy had nine.
The Lopes led by 10 at the break and the Vulcans got the lead under double digits only twice in the second half. Still, with Hilo's style of play, coach Trent May never felt too secure until late in the contest.
"A 10 or 12 point lead in this game wasn't very big," said May. "I think our team stayed disciplined with what we wanted to do. We did a good job of pushing the ball, and we gave up some fastbreak points, but we were still able to stay disciplined.
"Hilo is a tough team to play. They have great intensity and they won't go away. It took 35-36 minutes to seal the deal."
The Lopes shot 55.9 percent (19-of-34) in the first half and finished the game connecting at a 52.3 (34-of-65) clip. The Lopes had 22 assists on 34 baskets.
Hilo was led by senior forward Amanda Adams with 20 points. Senior forward Sheila Azevedo had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
GCU has another key PacWest game Thursday, at home, against Dixie State, which is also unbeaten in conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
