With plenty of rest and plenty of momentum, Grand Canyon University's women's basketball team returns to Antelope Gym Tuesday to take on Hawai'i Hilo.
It has been 11 days between games, the longest stretch of the season, as GCU hopes to continue a four-game winning streak and remain unbeaten in the Pacific West Conference.
"Last week of practice was very productive and we worked very hard," said junior Dana Iverson (pictured). "I don't think we've lost our train of thought. We kept our goals in line and worked hard all week."
The Lopes are 2-0 in the conference, joining Hawai'i Pacific and Dixie State -- which comes into town Thursday -- as the only remaining unbeatens. Hilo is 2-2.
"We were fortunate to have a good week of practice last week," said coach Trent May on the team's efforts to maintain its consistent play despite being away from the playing floor. "When you have good efficient practices and you don't have overkill I think that helps when you have a long break."
Though the Lopes own a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series, the games have been very competitive. All three of last year's contests were decided by six points or less. In the 2006-07 season, one contest went overtime and a second, which the Lopes eventually won by 19, was a one-point game at the half.
"I expect nothing less than a hard-fought battle," said May. "Playing at home helps, but we still have to really be channeled and focused on what we're doing. It's going to be a 40-minute game. I don't care if we're up 10 with two minutes to go or down 10 with two minutes to go. It could come down to the last minute and last possession of the game. You can't take anything for granted in a conference game."
It will be a week full of battles for the Lady Lopes as Dixie State comes to town for games Thursday and Friday.
