BELMONT, Calif. -- Grand Canyon's two-time defending Pacific West Conference champion women's basketball team got off to a great start with a 72-59 win over Notre Dame de Namur, last year's runnerup, Friday.
The Antelopes (6-6, 1-0) took the lead six minutes into the first half and led the rest of the way.
GCU shot 49 percent from the field, hit all 14 of its free-throw attempts, outrebounded the Argonauts 35-31 and got a solid performance from its bench, outscoring NDNU 26-3.

Junior guard Rosalyn Nelson led the Lopes with 19 points, four assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Samantha Murphy scored 16 and grabbed nine rebounds to go with five assists.
Off the bench, senior Jacque Stevens, junior Erin Murphy (pictured) and sophomore guards Kristi Girdley and Marnee Overton all made big contributions. Stevens had 12 points and seven rebounds. Erin Murphy had six rebounds, including four on the offensive end, and scored two points. Girdley and Overton had six points eace. Girdley added three assists. Overton was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
