For many, the hustle and bustle that goes with the holiday season deals with pre-Christmas shopping.
For Grand Canyon University's women's basketball team, it deals with its post-Christmas rush to the court.
The Antelopes (4-5) have four games in six days starting with Monday's 8 p.m. contest with Findlay, part of the Trip Sports Grand Canyon University Classic at Mesa Skyline High School. The Lopes follow with a Tuesday contest with No. 23 Franklin Pierce, then open Pacific West Conference play Friday at Notre Dame de Namur and follow with a a Saturday non-conference battle with NDNU.
"If you like to play this is great," said GCU head coach Trent May (pictured). "If you're a gamer this is your week."
The Antelopes are one of 17 teams that will play in the Trip Sports Grand Canyon University Classic. Games begin Sunday and end Wednesday. The field includes men's and women's teams from both the NCAA and NAIA. The event opens at 6 p.m. Sunday with NCAA Division II No. 15 Shippensburg (PA) taking on No. 23 Franklin Pierce.
GCU will get a big test in both classic games. Along with a nationally-ranked opponent, the Lopes face a Findlay squad with a 7-2 record. It gives them great preparation going into 2009 and defending their PacWest championship.
"You want tough games to prepare you for conference," said May.
At NDNU, the Antelopes will face a team that finished second to them in last year's standings. GCU finished 15-3 in the conference and the Argonauts were 13-5. The Lopes win at NDNU last February clinched the conference crown.
This year, though, there's more at stake in the PacWest. The conference will have an automatic bid to the NCAA West Region.
"If you want to go to the regional and if we want to win the conference for a third time, you have to hold a grudge against everybody," May said. "With more to gain in the conference this year, every team is a rival.
"(NDNU) is a team that pushes us. They got us on our home floor last year and they have good talent back. They have a long break (before playing us) so they'll be ready to play."
