As much as Grand Canyon wanted to forget about last weekend's performance, losing twice at the Regis University Classic, coach Trent May wouldn't let it happen.
Though hopeful a 38-point loss to Regis was just one of those rare Murphy's Law days, May didn't want to take any chances, addressing the situation with his team Monday.
The group responded with a good week of practice heading into Saturday's contest at Cal State Stanislaus (5-1).
"We got some cobwebs out. When it's that ugly you do an overhaul of things," said May. "When you lose as badly as that you do some soul-searching and go back to basics."
Along with ending a two-game losing streak, the Lopes are looking for their first road win of the season. CSU Stanislaus is 4-0 at home, though its averaging margin of win in those four victories is just 3.8 points.
"We're going to put those games behind us and continue to work hard," said senior forward Jacque Stevens (pictured on main page). "Last weekend we didn't play like we can, we will."
Saturday's contest is Grand Canyon's third road/neutral site game of a nine-game stretch. It travels to California again next week to take on Chico State and Sonoma State, then plays two games in the GCU Classic at Mesa Skyline High School before a pair of road encounters against conference foe Notre Dame de Namur.
"We're using (the losses) as motivation," said freshman guard Steffani Liscum (pictured, right). "It's never any fun when you lose. It helps our motivation for the next game. We've gone back to basics of basketball and fix the little things."
