The building of the 2008-09 Grand Canyon University women's basketball team continues at the GCU Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday.
GCU will take on Cal State LA Friday at 7 p.m. and CSU San Bernardino 4 p.m. Saturday. Regis will play CSU San Bernardino 5 p.m. Friday and CSLA 2 p.m. Saturday.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend. It's going to be a great weekend to experience more basketball," said junior Stacy Haddow.
Experience is important for the Antelopes. Three freshmen and one junior college transfer saw their first action in last week's 75-74 loss at Western New Mexico.
"One thing that helps (going into this weekend) is the familiarity," said head coach Trent May. "We've gone through warmups. We've gone through halftime, adversity, having a lead.
"I think we'll come out better prepared and I hope the lights come on in the first half."
Along with getting more experience, GCU wants to play better. A slow start last week put the team in an 11-point hole by halftime.
"We need to get into it at the beginning and not wait until the second half," said junior point guard Rosalyn Nelson (pictured).
GCU shot just 23.3 percent in the first half. WNMU hit 58.6 percent of its field goal tries. The numbers were turned around in the final 20 minutes with the Lopes connecting at a 58.1 clip. The Mustangs fell to 33.3.
The Antelopes turned the ball over 23 times, another aspect they want to improve this weekend.
"It's good to have that first game under our belt," said senior Ashley Hardin, who led the Lopes with 21 points and nine rebounds. "We need to take care of the ball, but we have to do that every game."
After this weekend's games, GCU will get another shot at Western New Mexico Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Antelope Gym.
