SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Western New Mexico's Ashley Vigil hit a layup with two seconds to go to give the Mustangs a 75-74 win over Grand Canyon Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
GCU's Rosalyn Nelson scored with eight seconds left to give the Antelopes the lead. Nelson finished with 15 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals. Ashley Hardin led the Lopes with 21 points and nine rebounds.
"The girls really played hard and really got after it," said GCU coach Trent May. "We're disappointed, but we never stopped playing hard."
Grand Canyon trailed by 11 at the half, but rallied to lead by as much as six, 47-41, in the second.
"It was a battle all the way," added May, who said his club was hurt by the Mustangs' 16 offensive rebounds.
For the Lopes, Stacy Haddow added 13 points and six rebounds. In her college debut, freshman Steffani Liscum (pictured) had eight points and three rebounds.
