Murphy ties career-high with 33
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Trailing by as much as 20 points in the second half, Grand Canyon got the deficit down to two, with 1:08 left, before losing to Dixie State 93-88 in a Pacific West Conference contest at Burns Arena Saturday.
GCU (12-7, 6-2) was down 56-40 at halftime. The 'Lopes tightened things with a 14-0 run, getting seven points from senior Stacy Haddow (Chino Valley, Ariz./Chino Valley), five from junior Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) and the final two on a layup from Kia Gibson (Nine Mile Falls, Wash./Lakeside/N. Idaho).
The rally cut the score to 86-82 with 3:03 left. Two Murphy free throws at the 1:08 mark got the margin down to two.
Murphy hit 16-of-17 free throws and tied a career-high with 33 points. She has 1,225 for her career and trails the program's all-time leading scorer, Jennifer Cobb (2002-07), by 56 points (1,281).
Gibson scored 20, on 10-of-11 shooting, and grabbed 11 rebounds. She also blocked two shots.
Murphy added four assists, three steals and six rebounds. Senior Ashley Hardin (Phoenix, Ariz./Marcos de Niza/N. Arizona) had four assists.
The loss puts GCU in a tie for second place in the PacWest with Dixie State (10-7, 6-2). Hawai'i Pacific leads the league with a 9-0 conference record.
The 'Lopes will head to Hawai'i for four games beginning Feb. 14 at league-leader HPU.
