Grand Canyon will say farewell to 2010 Friday.
It was a great year.
The Antelopes are 24-4 in the calendar year and look for win No. 25 when they take on Texas A&M International 2 p.m. Friday at Antelope Gymnasium. It is the team’s final non-conference game before heading into Pacific West Conference play Jan. 8 at Dixie State College.
“To go 24-4 shows we’re a very capable team,” said coach Trent May. “Our goal going forward after the break is to come back hungry and not just pick up where we left off in 2010, but to take a step up.”
During 2010, GCU beat two nationally-ranked teams (UC San Diego, Seattle Pacific). It lost only once on the road (Dixie State), once on a neutral site (to nationally-ranked Alaska-Anchorage) and twice at home (Hawai’i Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur).
For the 2010-11 season, GCU is 11-1 overall, ranked No. 19 in the nation, have won 10 straight games, six in a row at Antelope Gym and boast the nation’s leading scorer in senior guard
Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep).
“To finish our non-conference schedule 12-1 is where we want to be and where we thought we should be,” added May. “It may surprise a few people, a couple players, but as a staff, we thought it was a very high probability to be where we’re at.”
Today’s New Year’s Eve special is the first-ever meeting between GCU and TAMIU. The Dustdevils are led by senior center Johnna Williams, who averages a double-double (11.6 points, 10.4 rebounds). She is the daughter of former NBA player John “Hot Rod” Williams, who had a stint with the Phoenix Suns in the 90s.
Murphy averages 23.7 points per game, on pace to be only the second player in school history to average 20-plus points in a season. Kelly McRee averaged 20.2 points for the 2003-04 season.
“Obviously, it’s nice to have some confidence going into the conference. It can be a grueling season,” said Murphy, of the team’s hopes of continuing the winning streak Friday. “During the non-conference we’ve developed into a good, solid team. We have improvements to make, but it has been a great stepping stone. I think we’re a championship team, hopefully we’ll play like it.”
