An 18-0 run to start the second half proved to be the difference in Grand Canyon’s 75-57 victory over Lake Superior State in the GCU/Crowne Plaza Thanksgiving Classic at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
Third among others receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 poll, Grand Canyon improved to 5-1 on the season and will play host to CSU Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m. Lake Superior State dropped to 3-2.
Grand Canyon held Lake Superior State scoreless for the first 7:29 of the second half. Five different players had field goals in the 18-0 flurry, which opened with a 3-pointer from senior
Kristi Girdley.

“I wasn’t pleased with the last part of the first half,” said GCU coach Trent May. “We gave up only seven points and in the final 7:42 they go for 20. There were some breakdowns.
“I was definitely pleased with our burst of energy in the second half. We were able to sustain it and we did a good job of rebounding.”
Grand Canyon led by 18 in the first half and helped force 15 Lake State turnovers, but the Lakers rallied to cut the ‘Lopes lead to 31-27 at the break.
“It was great for our team to show we could overcome adversity,” said Smith. “Coach stressed working on defense and to let it take over our offense and that’s what it did in the second half.”
GCU’s defense held Lake State to only 30.4 percent shooting for the game and only 23.3 in the second half.
