Grand Canyon University’s
Ivan Nechunaev (Tomsk, Russia , Tomsk National University) was today named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while
Rashelle Klontz (Sandpoint, ID, Sandpoint) was named the RMAC Women’s Diver of the Week, after their performances at the Trinity Invitational in Dallas, Texas this past weekend.
Nechunaev captured his third RMAC Swimmer of the Week award this season after winning all four of his individual events at the Trinity Invitational. He set NCAA B cut times in the 500 free (4:38.44) and 100 fly (50.99). Nechunaev also improved his B cut time in the 200 fly (1:53.40) and was a member of GCU’s winning 400 medley and 400 free relay teams.
Nechunaev was earlier today named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Division II Swimmer of the Week, for the week of Nov. 16-22, as announced by CollegeSwimming.com.
“Ivan had some great swims last week and his awards today are well earned,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “When you consider that there were some great performances by the Mesa State swimmers who were rested and shaved this past weekend, and Ivan won’t be rested and shaved until Seattle.”
Klontz, competing in her first year of diving competition, won her second RMAC Diver of the Week award this season. She set school records in the 1-meter and 3-meter events this past weekend at the Trinity Invitational. Klontz finished sixth in the 1-meter with 232.45 points and ninth in the 3-meter with 179.6 points.
“Rashelle is doing an amazing job with her diving, especially when you consider that we don’t have facilities for her to train consistently,” said Schaffer. “We have her working with a club program off campus a couple of days a week, and she is a trooper about it. She will only continue to get better.”
This is the seventh and eighth weekly RMAC honor of the season for GCU.
Mychala Lynch (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier College Prep , Texas Christian University) has taken the award twice, with teammate
Catherine Polito (Cottonwood, AZ, Mingus Union) winning the award once.
The GCU swimming teams will return to the pool from Dec. 3-5, where they will compete in the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
