Grand Canyon was able to get a set, but not the match, against first-place University Hawai'i at Hilo at UHH Gymnasium Saturday.
GCU (10-14, 5-7) lost 3-1 to the Pacific West Conference leaders by set scores of 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15.
Grand Canyon will finish its Hawaii trip with matches Monday and Tuesday at BYU-Hawai'i. Both matches will be televised on BYU-TV, which can be found locally on Channel 114 on Cox Cable; Channel 374 on DirecTV; Channel 139 on Qwest, and Channel 9403 on the Dish Network. The matches start at 10:30 p.m. Phoenix time.
GCU lost to Hilo (14-3, 9-1) Friday.
On Saturday, middle hitter Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian) had 12 kills, a .417 attack percentage and three block assists. Senior middle hitter Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra, Mesa Community College), who helped rally the club for a third-set win, had seven kills, a .312 hitting percentage and three block assists.
Sophomore outside hitter Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) had 10 kills, 12 digs and three block assists. Sophomore setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) had 38 assists, 12 digs and three block assists and junior libero Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had 23 digs.
Freshman Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley) -- who had two late kills in the third -- finished with eight kills and six digs. Senior outside hitter Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) had six kills and six digs. Sophomore Sara Bowden (Tempe, AZ, Corona del Sol, Northern Arizona) had eight digs.
In the third set, GCU trailed 16-10. A run of three straight points, on a Hilo ball-handling error, block from Henry and Ehlo and a kill from Henry tied the match at 20. A Henry kill tied it at 21 and a Hilo service error knotted it at 22. Ausmus, Ehlo and Ausmus, again, ended the set with consecutive kills, but the 'Lopes were unable to take the momentum into the fourth set.
GCU hit .289 in the third set and .259 in the fourth, while Hilo hit .417 in the fourth set.
