Grand Canyon opened its four-match trip to Hawai'i with a 3-0 loss to Pacific West Conference leader University of Hawai'i at Hilo Friday at UHH Gymnasium.
Grand Canyon (10-13, 5-6) lost by set scores of 25-16, 25-22, 25-17.
Sophomore middle hitter
Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian) had nine kills. Junior hitter
Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, CA, Newbury Park, The Master's College) had six kills and two block assists. Freshman
Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley) and senior
Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) had six kills each.
Sophomore setter
Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) had 26 assists, nine digs and one block assist. Junior
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had 20 digs and sophomore
Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) had 10.
GCU had a 10-6 lead in the second set, but couldn't thwart off a Vulcan rally that saw the home team score seven straight.
In the third, McBride had a kill to cut a Hilo lead to 12-11, but the first-place club scored the next four.
The teams meet again Saturday at 8 p.m. Phoenix time.
