Grand Canyon falls in four to HPU

Grand Canyon battled back from a 2-0 deficit for the second straight night, but was unable to provide the same magic that saw it rally for a 3-2 win on Monday.
In its second match in as many nights against Hawai'i Pacific -- and fourth league contest in five days -- GCU (9-12, 5-5) lost 3-1 to the Sea Warriors at Antelope Gymnasium Tuesday.
GCU lost by set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16.
The 'Lopes had 36 first-set digs and a four-set season-high of 96. GCU has had 96 or more digs in each of its last three matches, its only 90-plus digs totals for the season.
Junior Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had 35 digs, the most for a GCU player in a four-set match this season. She was only two off her season and team best 37, set in a five-set match against Chaminade Saturday.
Like it did Monday, Grand Canyon rallied for an impressive third-set win. Though leading as much as six, 17-11, the 'Lopes had to fight off a Sea Warriors' comeback. Tied at 21, senior Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) and junior Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, CA, Newbury Park, The Master's College) each had kills. HPU scored the next point, but McBride got the 'Lopes one point closer to a win with a block. Frosh Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley) ended the set with a kill.
Unlike Monday, GCU was unable to force a fifth set. Hawai'i Pacific scored the first three points and led the entire set.
Ausmus and sophomore Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) each had 11 kills. McBride had eight. Five players earned double-digits in digs. Following Durbin, Ausmus had 17, sophomore Sara Bowden (Tempe, AZ, Corona del Sol, Northern Arizona) had 13. Ehlo totaled 11 and sophomore Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) had 10.
McBride added two solo blocks and three assists. Sophomore Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian) had six block assists and Ehlo had four.
Preach had 22 assists and freshman Jessica Posse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Rancho Cucamonga) had 19.
Grand Canyon will travel to Embry-Riddle for a 6 p.m. match Thursday.
