Samantha Murphy was named the PacWest women's basketball player of the week.
Murphy, a 5-8 freshman guard from Xavier Prep, averaged 11.7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals over a three-game non-conference stretch. She sank 16 of 20 free throws for 80 percent from the line, hitting 6 of 6 against No. 3-ranked UC San Diego on the road Sunday.
Through 10 games, Murphy is averaging 12.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2 steals on a team that's went 4-6 with games against stronger conference competition.
"Overall, they were tough teams," Murphy said. "I was kind of disappointed with the loss against Cal State LA. We just need to work on finishing games. We're right there, we just need to get a little bit tougher. We'll get there. We're all still learning about each other.
"I appreciate all the good competition, and I think it's going to help us in the long run with conference. Our main goal is to get to the NCAA competition.
"I think we do realize that going into conference we're probably one of the better teams. We never want to understimate other teams. You never know how you're offense is going to be. As long as we keep working hard, we'll be all right. I'm pretty confident we're gonna do well in the conference."
Grand Canyon has another opportunity against No. 13 Holy Family (Pa.) University at 6 p.m. Dec. 29 as part of the Trip Sports Classic in Antelope Gym. PacWest league play begins Jan. 2 at home against Hawaii Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
