Lopes split with Vulcans; tied for 2nd
This journey lingers on.
Grand Canyon University's softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Friday at GCU's Stapleton-Pierson Stadium, losing the opener 9-7 and winning the finale 11-1 in five innings.
GCU (18-17-1, 10-6 PacWest) moved into a tie with Dixie State (21-19, 10-6) for second place in the league.
"That's big," Antelopes coach Ann Pierson said.
Hilo (6-8, 5-7) is in fourth place.
Grand Canyon took a 4-1 lead after two innings in the first game when Michelle Farrell belted a two-run single to left-center. But Hilo scored four runs in the bottom half of the second, cashing in on back-to-back home runs by Tessa Truong and Jerica Faasua.
Hilo added three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 9-5. Grand Canyon picked up two runs on a Randi Johns home run to left field in the seventh, but the Antelopes couldn't push any more runs across.
Strohm Fouty went 3 for 4 with two doubles in the opener. Farrell was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Tana Holtorf was 1 for 4 with two RBI. Jamie Stacy went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Justine Williams and Christine Medrano each were 1 for 3. Johns was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Johns' homer was her fifth of the season.
Truong was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Faasua was 3 for 3 with two RBI. Kanani Numata went 2 for 4.
Farrell (10-7) went all five innings in the mercy-rule shortened second game, allowing four hits, one run and no walks to pick up the win.
GCU scored five runs in the top of the third when Williams drove in a run and Farrell had an RBI single up the middle, and the 'Lopes cashed in on four Hilo errors in the inning. The Antelopes scored three more runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead.
GCU's Regan Ahl got "Ahl" of one in the fourth, crushing her first career home run -- a two-run blast to left. Stacy added an RBI triple in the inning.
Yasmeen Watkins went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Farrell and Stacy were both 2 for 4 with an RBI. Ahl (pictured) was 1 for 3 with two RBI, and Williams was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Numata was 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Brittany Dock went 2 for 2 for the Vulcans.
GCU will play at Western New Mexico in a pair of doubleheaders Tuesday and Wednesday in Silver City, N.M.
