Johns breaks school record Lopes split with Argos
Grand Canyon split a doubleheader with Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., Friday. The Antelopes won the first game in a 10-2 six-inning run rule contest, and dropped the second game 6-5.
The Antelopes (21-20-1, 11-7 PacWest) are percentage points behind Dixie State (24-22, 13-7) for second place in the league. Notre Dame is 20-27, 9-13.
Yasmeen Watkins went 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBI in the first game. Randi Johns was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Jamie Stacy was 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Michelle Farrell, Tana Holtorf and Megan Niver each had two of Grand Canyon's 15 hits.
Niver got the win, allowing two runs and nine hits, while striking out three.
In Game 2, Farrell was 3 for 4, and Johns went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Johns (pictured) broke her own school record for homers in a season, cranking her 10th in this one. Watkins' two blasts in the first game gave her nine this year.
GCU outhit NDNU 9-5, but the Antelopes committed six errors. The Argos did not commit an error.
Farrell took the loss, allowing five hits, five earned runs, two walks and struck out three in six innings of work. Argonauts pitcher Cierra Keeney picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing five earned runs, five walks and struck out two.
The two teams were scheduled to meet again in a doubleheader Saturday.
