CARSON, Calif. -- Grand Canyon University fought back from a 5-1 fifth-set deficit to earn its first win of the season, 3-2, over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Cal State Los Angeles/Dominguez Hills Tournament at the Torodome Saturday.
The Antelopes (1-3) took the lead for good 8-7 on a CSUDH service error, then extended the lead on the lone kill of the night from frosh Laurann Durbin (Phoenix/Sunnyslope), a Toros attack error and a kill from Whitney Estes (Gardnerville, NV/Douglas). Grand Canyon won the decisive set 15-11.
Durbin added a game-high 21 digs and three service aces.
The teams traded sets with the Antelopes winning the first and third by scores of 25-20 and 25-17. The Toros won 25-22 and forced the fifth set with a 25-18 victory.
Brooke Baker (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood) finished off the fifth set with a service ace.
Heather Baron (Lancaster, CA/Saguaro HS/Scottsdale CC) led the Antelopes with 14 kills. Jenna Skadeland (Williston, ND/Williston HS) followed with 13. Megan Toth (Phoenix/Arcadia) added 10. Skadeland (pictured) hit .379 for the match. Katie Meyers (Phoenix/Sunnyslope) had 33 assists and four service aces. Both were team highs.
Grand Canyon hosts the Cactus Classic Sept. 5-6. The Antelopes entertain Pt. Loma, Western State and Alaska Anchorage.
